My thoughts exactly. Max did his best not to force things this time (other than that dump off to Manase) but it didn't do us much good. TCU is showing us
where our deficiencies are. We definitely need more speed, especially on defense. Can we get it? I don't know. But we've had better defenses in the
past and surely we can improve in future years. I just hope we can win out. This year can still be a success if we do that. I'm glad we've got a bye
week to pick up the pieces.

So far, I'm 100%. Before the season I predicted we would we would lose to FSU, TCU and UT. And we would finish 9-3 and end up in San Diego for a bowl game.
I also predicted TCU and UT would finish in the top 20 and BYU would not. UT will now move ahead of BYU in the polls. Not that I'm a defeatist, I just look
at things realistically. Because of our limited recruiting base, we will never get the kind of athletes TCU and UT can get. TCU has unlimited access to Texas
and beyond. UT also has access to players we can't touch, and UT has the intense hatred for BYU to use as motivation. The Y has excelled beyond reason in
most sports and it's hard to explain why. We have no athletes (with few exceptions) 90% of the players know they will never play in the pro's, Many of
the players are married, and many are "Church Missionaries" for crying out loud. Not exactly what you would expect championship teams to be made up
of. So, how does BYU do it? How are we able to compete year after year? Just to finish in the top three in any sport in the conference is, to me, a tribute to
the coaches and players. When you look at the success of BYU sports despite the cards stacked against them, it makes me proud to be a fan.

When it comes to athletes I believe byu has quite a few, that is why we put so many players in the NFL (13). As a side note San Diago has the most (from the
MWC) at 15. The Problem is with team speed, for the most part we are slow. Without Mackay our recievers are slow. our d-backs are slow and our d-line is
slow. Not too long ago TCU had the same problem, thier fix was a change in philosiphy, instead of size they went for speed, tcu recruted a whole group of
running backs and made them defensive players. maybe thats what BYU should do. Either way if BYU wins out I will call this season a huge success, go cougs.

I see what you're saying, Blue, but I don't know if I can go along with all of it. I'd be surprised if we lose to Utah. I haven't lived in Utah for a long time, so I'm not as aware of what is being reported in Salt Lake. Maybe I'm too far away from the Utah program, but I've seen almost every single game Utah has played, and I'd be surprised if BYU doesn't win. |

I think we can beat Utah this year. I watched their game against Air Force and I wasn't impressed. I think we'll learn a lot when we see how we do
against Wyoming. They have a good defense and we're playing in the dreaded Laramie. If we win that one convincingly then I think we will muster the
confidence to win out--at least conference. We'll see about the bowl.
BTW, was TCU's recruiting of RB's a recent change? I thought that was Patterson's approach all along. |

Cougar in Big D wrote: I agree, I would also be surprised if Utah beats BYU this year, but Utah seems to get up for BYU more than BYU gets up for Utah.... So you never know... As far as Utah's speed it truly is about the same as BYU, since they mainly recruit from the same pool. Just Like Boise St's speed, a lot of their starters who are highly re-guarded are from Idaho. It more about the type of D they play... Years ago (2001-2005), I would watch Boise St put their DB's (mainly CB's) out on a island on one on one coverage, because their main goal was to stop the run first and for most (normally by playing a run blitz). Since they were always playing (I would bet 75% of the time) it also already gave them a run at the QB on passing plays. The majority of the time that high risk high reward style of play paid off, for against WAC teams and other non-Auto teams, but not so much against the BC$ schools. Since Peterson has took over in 2006 their lock down CB's have got better and Boise St has mixed thinks up a little more on D plus have got better overall talent. Thus, they have fared much better against the BC$ schools as of late. But Boise St, TCU, and Utah all seem to be thought of having better speed on D than BYU, but one thing I would to say is how much more does those teams play man coverage than BYU does? Truth of the matter is BYU normally plays very much straight up zone D, which in truth is by all accounts is a prevent D... not a attacking D like manning up one on one coverage by the CB's. As far as I know an attacking D will always look much faster than a prevent zone D... Rex

I think Utah and BYU are fairly even this year. I don't really know which team is better. I am buy no means football coaching material. I know very little
about specific assignments for the O linemen and the D linemen. Sometimes I see little things I question, but I always think the coaches are far smarter than
me so I don't say much. When we played FSU, I thought their linemen on both sides of the ball were much faster that our guys. Certainly their receivers and
D backs were faster. I don't think UT has that kind of speed, but they are fast enough to give us all kinds of challenges. Also, KW and his staff study our
offense and defense under a microscope. I believe we have the overall advantage this year, but UT will always bring their best game of the year when they play
us.
Reading the other boards, I think most of our fans, and foes, have unrealistic expectations of BYU. I'm quite happy if we win 9 or 10 games and make it to a bowl game every year. Not many teams in the country can accomplish that. We have a great program and you would think all of our fans would appreciate that, but I see a ton of criticism from both fans and foes every time we lose a game. I guess we should expect it, but it is disappointing sometimes. |

I just don't see the quality CB's we need. Recruit all the RB's we want, our RB's are not as fast as our corners now. However, if our corners
were to learn how to hang on to the receivers shirts like TCU's did, we may not need them to be much faster----

Expectations | ||

Yeah, I hear you, Blue. I'm like that myself. I think it's reasonable to expect BYU to win 9 games or more every year plus a bowl game at least half
of the time. We haven't been as good in bowls as I'd like, but I think in general, we have a great program and I'm happy where we are. But I also
want to see BYU make the BCS once in a while. Utah has been there twice in the last 5 years. If Utah can do it, I don't think it's unreasonable to
expect BYU to do it also.
But here's the problem - the system is ridiculously biased, and it's not likely that a 1-loss team from outside the automatic conferences will ever get into a BCS bowl game. It's not impossible, but just not terribly likely. So after every first loss of the season, fans abandon the team and start questioning our talent and the coaches and the program and if we're not as good as Utah or TCU or Boise St, and why does the BCS exist, and how come we're out but the Big East is in, and blah, blah, blah. And that just illustrates why I hate the BCS. Way back in the 80s, long before the BCS and the Bowl Alliance and the Coalition and all of that, nobody thought of our season as a failure when we didn't go undefeated. In fact, most fans were happy with going to the Holiday Bowl and playing some big-name team from some big conference and giving them a run for their money. Now, though, if we're not in the Fiesta Bowl, everyone wants to jump off a building, thanks to the BCS. But yeah, I agree with you, even if my expectations are slightly higher. |
