Anybody else worried about the game this week? |
Lead | |
|
I have been getting more and more concerned about this week's game at Wyoming. I think Wyoming is underrated. They've played a tough schedule and
played some pretty good teams pretty well. They hung in there a long time with Texas and even lead the game for a short while. They lost it in the second
half, but that speaks more to depth than talent, in my opinion. I think Wy could give us some real trouble. If they get up a TD or two on us and Max panics,
we could be in for loss #3. After the way we lost against TCU at home, I am getting concerned about a 6-6 season! Wyoming and AFA are definitely not the
gimmies we have been taking them for, and utar (much as I hate to say it) did well to beat Wy last week. Somebody make me feel better!!

I'm always worried when we play Wyoming in Laramie in November. This year, they're better than they've been in the past, and like you said,
they've played some close games against some pretty good teams. Last week against Utah, though, I wasn't terribly impressed with Wyoming. I was more
underwhelmed with Utah. I honestly don't think Utah is very good. They could very literally be the worst 7-win team in the nation right now. But that
doesn't have much to do with Wyoming.
Like you, I think this is a dangerous game this weekend, but I think BYU will win it. Certainly anything is possible when BYU plays in Laramie. But in my opinion, there's no question BYU has more talent and better talent than Wyoming does. Like the Texas game, the first half will be close. But as long as Hall doesn't panic, I think BYU will pull away and win by a comfortable margin in the second half. |

I'm really glad it's a noon game this year and the weather promises to be pretty good for November in Laramie. I look to learn a lot about the rest of
the year from this game. Will we show that we can move the ball against a good D? We need to score some real points in this one. If we don't then I'm
going to be wondering if we can beat AF, let alone Utah.
And our D needs to show solid improvement. This is another elusive QB -- a big problem for us. Let's see if those little improvements Jan Jorgenson talked about will make a difference or if it's just wishful thinking. I like the prospect Bronco hinted at of rotating more players and keeping them fresh. If that will allow us to play more plays going all out then I think it could make a difference even if we have a little talent drop-off. |

Boy, I guess I missed the wrong train... Because if BYU does not win by at least 14 I will truly be surprised... Were do we get the idea that Wyoming is
playing so much better from? It is true they are not turning the ball over at record pace they have the last 5 years, but that's about it...
Just a few numbers; Nationally ranked Total D for the MWC: #1 TCU #8 Air Force #17 Utah #50 BYU; last year #59 #52 San Diego St #71 Wyoming; last year #38 #94 Colorado St #98 New Mexico #112 UNLV Nationally ranked Total O for the MWC: #10 BYU; last year #16 #12 TCU #48 Utah #76 UNLV #82 Air Force #85 San Diego St #89 Colorado St #105 Wyoming; last year #108 #109 New Mexico It's all about match ups and since Bronco has became the Head Coach, BYU has had the biggest advantages in the match-ups against Wyoming and Air Force for what ever reason. Those O/D stats are interesting Rex. They would suggest that Wyo doesn't really have that great a defense. Of course, you have to figure in that they
played Texas this year.

But Texas O is not the strongest part of the team... Texas is rated at #31 on O (417.75), but the D is #3 (240.75).
Wyoming still has not played the 2 best O's in the MWC (#10 BYU & #12 TCU) yet, so that average (Wyoming's 371.50) is more than like going to go up. Now Texas did roll on Wyoming's D to the tune of 544 yards, but hey Weber St rolled up 425 yards against them... Rex

After the TCU game, I'm pretty convinced we're just a little above an average team this year, and without Max and Harvey we'd really be hurting.
When Max panics, and the weight is on the rest of the team, we just don't have what it takes, particularly on D. Regardless, I'm not knocking the team
or Bronco. I like what he does with those young men and I like his philosophy about what being a football player at BYU means. I just think expectations have
been higher than our team can support this year (and last). I'm still waiting for another magical 1984-type year.
I think Wyoming is a much improved team this year, regardless of what the numbers say in comparison to last year. I don't think we are improved over last year. I think the Tulane game boosted our numbers quite a bit. We scored a bucket load of points and held them to almost nothing, but they weren't very good. We play a good team and score one TD while they trot up and down the field. A mediocre team scores 54 points on us while we rack up 28, and we only did that because they had to keep giving us the ball back after every time they scored! Against OK, I think we played a great game against a pretty average team. OK is always over rated, just like Ohio State. I hope I am proven wrong this week and we just had a couple down games, but I'm not optimistic.

think we need to run the ball more...power football and take the pressure off max...control the clock and wear the Wy D down...will be intersted to see if WY
lines up to take the run away and force Max to do it all (how good arfe their corners?) or if they drop and give up some run to stop the big play

I like the fact we're using the quick opener more, the draw play is working, but it isn't exactly a draw trap. But I agree, we should be running the
ball more. Except at 7200 feet, a player can get tired real fast. I think we just play our game!
