I'm thinking it's not a new side, as I knew him he was always like that. I think he is a person who has to be able to concentrate on one task. He can
focus himself on one job "if" he doesn't have to tolerate distractions. That's why he's a great assistant coach, he doesn't have to
cover all the problems the head coach has to put up with.
I liked Gary as a person, I didn't like how he recruited, but then his problems always surfaced "after" letters of intent were signed, which demonstrated he wasn't doing a good job of checking recruits out. As far as money goes, he makes more now then Bronco will ever make. I'm happy we have Bronco, I was sad about the way BYU treated Crowton. The school give Crowton an extended contract, then tried to get out of that contract when they fired him. I didn't like that! I'm happy he's happy! Bob |

Nice article. I always liked Gary Crowton and was genuinely sorry he didn't work out for us. I kept hoping things would finally turn around but the sands
of the hourglass finally ran out for him.
This quote from his wife pretty much says it all about what it must be like to be a coach: "In this business, it's kind of a surreal life. They almost deify you, or else you're the dog of dogs when you're really just the same person doing the best you can." Isn't that true? Were BYU to go downhill again like it did during Crowton's tenure, I can only imagine how vehement the condemnation of Bronco would be. The same things he is praised for today would suddenly become his biggest faults. This quote at the end seems to describe an ideal coach for BYU: "Relaxed and calm. Educated and spiritual. Passionate and reverent." Who can fault Val Hale for hiring such a man? The essential missing qualification we didn't know was so important at the time was "well-organized." |

Yeah, it's a nice article.
For what it's worth, I've never been happy about how BYU treats its employees - especially when they fire their coaches. I tell you what, I could write volumes on this topic, but I'll just leave it at this. I'm embarrassed by how BYU fires its coaches. Gary Crowton definitely deserved to be treated better by people who profess to be "in the world, but not of the world." I my opinion, this is hypocrisy - plain and simple. And we don't have to quote scripture to see what Jesus thinks of hypocrites. But on the other hand, I couldn't be happier that Crowton is coaching someplace else and Mendenhall is coaching BYU. I think we are a lot better off now than we were then. And I think Crowton is also better off where he is as well. |
